Would you like to know more about fire detection systems? This article is made for you. Explore the different types of fire detection systems and delve into their working principle. From smoke detectors to thermal detectors and automatic extinguishing systems, discover the technologies that help prevent and respond effectively in the event of a fire.

Fire detection: the complete guide

Every day, several fires break out in the residential park and in professional premises. Even if the number of deaths, burns or people poisoned by smoke remains low, the material damage and the socio-economic consequences that these accidents cause are significant.

According to statistics, most businesses that suffered fires had to close their doors. This is why it is essential to adopt an effective protection solution. This is precisely the case for setting up a fire detection system. Find out more information about this.

How to detect a fire?

Most fires are linked to a failure of the electrical installation. This may cause a short circuit. But heat sources such as auxiliary heaters or the use of lamps unsuitable for the purpose and the environment can also cause a fire.

Kitchen equipment, especially those that run on gas, can also be the cause of a fire. Sometimes, the accident is caused by a lack of attention such as forgetting to add fuel to the fire or placing an flammable object such as a cloth near the fire. Poorly maintained heaters or candles left unattended should be added to the list of common causes of disaster.

Detecting the outbreak of fire means being able to avoid damage. However, in most cases, the accident occurs unexpectedly, hence the need to install a fire detection system or SDI. The presence of such equipment makes it possible to identify and prevent risks, and thus ensure the safety of building users.

How to detect a fire?

This is a type of device whose function is to detect the first signs of a fire starting . It is also designed to send signals. Thanks to the presence of such equipment, it is possible to trigger an intervention which allows the fire to be stopped as quickly as possible.

There is a wide range of fire detectors. Their composition and operating principle are not the same. But in general, an SDI installation is a set of three elements:

Sensors which are fire detection devices: Their function is to measure the change in a parameter such as smoke, temperature or flame.

The processing bodies: They are responsible for analyzing each piece of information emanating from the sensors and specifying the different states including standby, fault and alarm.

Signaling control equipment or ECS, also called fire control panel or signaling or control panel.

How to detect a fire?

As previously mentioned, there are different types of fire detection systems. They are classified according to their configuration.

The fire detection system can indeed be independent. This means that it is only used as a monitoring tool. It allows you to detect the beginnings of a fire as quickly as possible. Its presence allows rapid decision-making in the event of a fire, a means of avoiding disaster.

This SDI does not only have the monitoring function. It can also transmit information to a CSMI or fire safety centralizer. It is an entity that is part of the SSI (Fire Safety System). It is present in security companies and has three functions, namely:

  • Evacuation
  • Compartmentalization
  • Smoke extraction
