The unique design of projectors and high-power bays with removable power supply module allows the most flexible installation possible, as well as easy access and maintenance throughout the product's life. The power supply can be located at a distance from the lighting, all the wiring and parts that can be repaired can be placed in an easily accessible location, allowing faster and easier installation, maintenance and inspection. Hazardous areas are complex environments for any installation; additional measures shall be taken to ensure a safe and efficient lighting installation. One way to increase flexibility in these applications is to choose a modular design luminaire with a removable power supply module. In this article, we explore the three main benefits:
Modular design luminaires and removable power supply modules, such as SPARTAN High Power Flood and Bay, allow to mount the power supply system remotely, at a maximum distance of 100 m from the main luminaire. All cables and parts that can be repaired can be placed in an easy-to-access location, which facilitates installation and makes future maintenance much more efficient. Overall, the design facilitates faster and easier maintenance and inspection.
With easier access, costs are reduced. The most important cost over the lifetime of a luminaire comes from its maintenance and maintenance, especially with luminaires mounted in difficult places. Improving this access by installing the remote power supply module reduces maintenance time and costs. This may mean that specialized equipment such as lifts or rope access is no longer required. The speed of maintenance can also be increased, which helps to restore lighting faster and reduce downtime in order to minimize operational disruption. Having a PSU remotely reduces costs and provides greater flexibility to prescribers, distributors and end users.
The weakest link and the part most prone to defects in any LED luminaire will be electronic power supply (PSU). As a general rule, for each 10°C increase in temperature, the expected service life of the PSU will be halved.
The possibility of mounting the remote power module has particular advantages for installations in warm environments. Feeding units can be placed in a cooler place, avoiding overheating; which increases the lifespan. Placing the power module in a cooler area not only facilitates maintenance, but also means that maintenance is less frequent, which increases reliability.
An example of this could be a drilling rig in the Middle East, where the average temperature is 50°C in summer. By placing the power supply module separately, either at a lower level, away from direct sunlight or in a control room, you guarantee cooling of the power supply units and an increased service life.
