The GX-3R Pro is the largest 5-gas detector that fits in the palm of your hand (2.9" W x 2.6" H x 1.06" D).

It monitors and displays 5 different gases simultaneously. In addition to monitoring the standard confined space gases LEL, O2, CO and H2S, the
GX-3R Pro has a 5th channel where you can add infrared or toxic gas sensors (cyanide sensors). Hydrogen (HCN) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) are currently available for the GX-3R Pro). Two of the four sensor locations have interchangeable sensors providing flexible configurations, which can easily be changed in the field.

The Multi Gas Detector GX-6000 detects up to six gases of flammable gas, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, other toxic gas, volatile organic solvent gas (VOC), etc. at a time. It is perfect for safety management of hazardous chemicals whose risk assessment is mandatory. Multiple types of gas can be measured with one unit, resulting in improved work efficiency. It has two new functions to protect workers’ safety: a panic alarm is sounded manually to let people know abnormality and a man-down alarm which sounds automatically to let people around the worker know the abnormality, in case of no sensed operation for a certain period.

Built around high quality micro-sensor technology, the GX-2012 is a very small 5-sensor gas monitor with an integrated sample pump. Weighting only 360g, two working modes: Normal (for confined spaces) and bar hole. The GX-2012 can monitor standard confined space gases (LEL combustibles, oxygen content, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide), and it can also measure 100% volume methane and dynamically display either %LEL, or %volume with self-ranging. The GX-2012 can be used for gas line purge testing as well as standard safety testing.

Toxic and flammable gas detection instruments are generally available in two versions: portable (on-site measurement) and fixed (permanently installed in one location). In a given application, the most appropriate solution depends on several factors: staff attendance at the area, site conditions, permanent or transient risk, required test frequency and, not least negligible, financial resources.

Why are portable gas detectors so important?

Portable gas detectors are part of personal protective equipment (PPE); they are designed to ensure the safety of staff in relation to gas-related risks but also to test areas at risk before entering them.

These small devices are essential in many areas that are supposed to be at risk because they are the only way to continuously monitor the operator’s breathing area, whether static or mobile.

Although fixed gas detection perfectly protects the operator, it cannot move with the operator, so the operator may be required to enter an area beyond the scope of the fixed detector’s action.

Many sites use a mixture of fixed and portable gas detection, but portable gas detection is sometimes used alone.

This choice can be motivated in a number of ways:

  • The operator is only required to enter the area very rarely, making fixed gas detection very expensive.
  • The area may be small or difficult to access, which does not allow for fixed gas detection
  • The application that requires detection may itself be mobile. For example, when a vessel carrying liquefied natural gas unloads its cargo, the dock is stationary while the cargo ship itself is mobile due to the movements of the sea

Breathing area

The breathing area is defined as the 25 cm/10 inch radius around the operator’s mouth and nose. A portable device can be attached to different locations in the breathing area: it can be attached to a jacket or chest pocket (but should not be placed in a pocket) or held in place by a helmet harness/clip. It is essential that the device is always properly secured.

Typical gas requiring portable detection

There are many environments and applications that require monitoring the detection of portable gases, and many toxic and flammable gases can intervene.

The most commonly detected gases include:

  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Hydrogen sulphide
  • Oxygen depletion
  • Flammable gases such as methane, liquefied petroleum gas and liquid natural gas
  • Ammonia
  • Sulphur Dioxide
  • Chlorine
  • Chlorine dioxide
  • Nitrogen oxide
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Phosphine
  • Hydrogen cyanide
  • Ozone
  • Various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including acetone, benzene, toluene and xylene

Due to the variety of applications and the different processes implemented, many other gases can also be detected by portable devices.

Types of portable gas detectors

There are two main types of portable gas detectors:

  • Monogaz – devices designed to detect a gas
  • Multigas – devices designed to detect multiple gases. The variants are generally designed for 4 to 6 gases and combine different detection principles in a unit

In terms of continuous operation and maintenance, portable detectors are divided into two groups:

  • Permanent – this means that the device is a long-term solution requiring continuous maintenance that the operator can choose to perform in-house; it can also entrust it to a third-party provider
  • Disposable – this means that the device is a short-term solution (2 or 3 years) that requires no maintenance throughout its lifespan.

This type of device is often continuously operational from activation to shutdown.
